Chris studied Law at the University of Bristol before deciding to work in the charity sector with young people. His first role was as a schools development worker with The George Muller Foundation, before moving to Bedfordshire to help found Youthscape in 1993. Chris speaks and writes widely on issues relating to young people and has published several books including one for teenagers on family breakdown. He has a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology (Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties) from the University of Birmingham.

Martin Saunders

Martin Saunders

Deputy Chief Executive

Martin has wide experience of developing resources and materials for youth work and is the author of over ten books including Youthwork from Scratch. He worked previously as the Editor of the UK’s largest national youth work magazine Youthwork and writes and speaks widely on creative resource development, innovation and youth culture. His current work within the organisation focuses on the creative development process for new resources and materials.

Karen Hornett

Finance Director

Karen is Youthscape’s Finance Director. Karen qualified with the ACCA whilst working at Whitbread plc. Karen continued her career with Whitbread for a number of years holding various financial management positions.  She then went to work at BPP, the UK’s leading private accountancy college, where she lectured across all accounting qualifications. Karen became a subject specialist in management accounting, developing and writing management accounting courses at all levels and heading up the training of tutors in this faculty. Karen has been involved with Youthscape since it was founded when she worked as a volunteer youth worker at her local church. She became a trustee in 2011 before joining the team as a member of staff 18 months later.

Rachel Gardner

Relationships Theme Lead

Rachel is the Relationship Lead at Youthscape, responsible for pioneering new ways to engage young people in healthy relationships. A best selling author of a number of books for young people, Rachel speaks widely on youth and faith related topics. Outside of her role at Youthscape, Rachel is the President of the Girl’s Brigade England and Wales and a volunteer youth leader at her local church.

Dr Lucie Shuker

Director of Research

Lucie is the Director of Research at Youthscape, responsible for leading The Youthscape Centre for Research. Research is at the heart of the innovation process here at Youthscape, and on a local level this means responding to the needs of young people identified by Youthscape's youth work practitioners, and developing strategies to meet those needs. On a national scale, Lucie initiates and oversees research projects among young people in the UK, in order to give a reflective and representative picture of the reality of being a teenager today, and to inform practice and innovation in youth work.

Alex Drew

Director - Youthscape Luton (currently on maternity leave)

Alex is the Director of the pioneering local hub of Youthscape, leading the vision to transform the social, emotional and spiritual health of Luton young people. Alex has been a part of the Youthscape team since 2010, and in that time has particularly specialised in developing innovative projects that engage young people in exploring their biggest questions and spirituality. Before joining the team, she studied Education with Drama and English at Cambridge University and worked as a Team Leader for a schoolwork trust. In her spare time, with her husband she leads a church plant that meets in a pub, loves to share good food with friends and family and saves up for her next travels.

Events Assistant

Tiffany is the events assistant here at Youthscape where she manage the bookings for external hire at Bute Mills. This is an exciting new role at our state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Luton and all funds from the hire goes to supporting the work of Youthscape. When she is not at Youthscape, Tiffany works as an events stylist and graphic designer where she makes bespoke party decorations for various events.

Jenny Flannagan

Jenny Flannagan

National Projects Manager

Jenny manages many of our national-facing projects, including Open Me. Jenny also works as an actress and writer, and spent much of the last decade travelling around the world with Tearfund, making films and building an international network. She is married to Andy and they live in Luton with their two small children.

Editor: The Story

Phoebe is the editor of our quarterly research 'zine The Story - Statistics, Trends and Research for Youth Work. Prior to joining Youthscape, Phoebe was the editor of Youthwork and Childrenswork magazines. Outside of her role at Youthscape, Phoebe is currently doing a PhD at Kings College London, and is a volunteer youth leader at her local church on the Isle of Dogs, where she lives with husband Josh.

Nicki Summerson

Finance Manager

Nicki is one of Youthscape's longest-serving members of staff, and has held a number of roles as the organisation has changed and developed.  She's currently our finance manager, responsible for all our day to day financial needs.  Nicki is passionate about all our wonderful local supporters and loves enjoying balancing her financial role with supporting and liaising with them.  Nicki is Youthscape’s unofficial fount of all knowledge and is the glue that holds the office together! She also has the biggest computer screen.
