Don't be put off by the title, Moderate Violence is a carefully written teen novel that covers a whole range of issues from relationships, identity and self-harm. The self-harm element is almost incidental, which makes for a much easier read, yet still highlights just how easy it is for any teenager to succumb.
This would make an ideal read for any young person who wants to get to grips with understanding these issues in a different way, and it's a great conversation-starter for an adult who is trying to offer support and is looking for a different way to broach a difficult subject.
Moderate Violence may conjure up a variety of assumptions, but by the end you realise how clever the title really is. This is self-harm fiction that works.
