Course outline

There has been a sharp rise in the number of young people seeking help because of anxiety as they struggle to cope with the demands of modern life. The causes include bullying and cyber-bullying, eating problems, relationship issues and school pressures such as homework and exams. Panic attacks in young people are something many school staff and youth workers have to deal with on a daily basis. This course will outline the different types of anxiety disorders, what causes them and how to recognise the symptoms in a young person. It will teach you how to deal with panic attacks and emergencies, as well as longer term strategies to help young people develop resilience. The course also covers the specific areas of exam-related anxiety and gives practical advice on anxiety about the transition from primary to secondary education.

Learning outcomes

  • An understanding of the main types of anxiety disorder
  • How to recognise the physical and psychological indicators of anxiety
  • An understanding of perfectionism as a trigger to anxiety
