Join a team
We need a whole bunch of amazing team members to help us run Satellites. There’s something for every skill set so if you’re available and willing to get stuck in… Keep reading!
Who can apply?
We’re looking for some hard-working, servant-hearted people who want to enable young people to meet with Jesus, to learn how to keep him at the centre of their lives and to help us make Satellites the best event it can be. There are several different teams to apply for so there should be something to suit everyone’s skill set – from practical to administrative, welcoming people as they arrive to tidying the site up as they leave.
Some roles are for 18+ but we also have our popular 50/50 ticket for 16 and 17 year olds. You’ll serve on a team for part of the day and receive a reduced ticket rate for the event. (You can tick this on your application form, and then the reduced rate will be added once your application has been accepted)
What's expected of me?
Each team is slightly different – have a read below for more information – but you can expect to work for around 8 hours a day. Outside of those times you can enjoy the event! Your team leaders will be in contact in the weeks running up to the event with more information about your specific roles.
All Satellites team members will be asked to attend an on-site briefing the evening
BEFORE the event starts and required to help with pack down until midday on the day
AFTER the event (which is also when most delegates leave as the event officially finishes at midnight).
So, for 2024 the Team Dates are 1st August – 7th August 2024
Please factor this into your planning as it is crucial that all team attend these elements at the beginning and end of the event.
We hope that everyone serving on team has a brilliant week – playing their part in making Satellites happen, meeting new people, building solid friendships with the other volunteers and serving young people as they journey with us to explore what it looks like to put God at the centre of everything we do. The amount of time each team member serves will vary, but you should expect to be on shift for a minimum of 6 hours and maximum of 10 hours each day. In return for your hard work, we’d love to offer you:
A free ticket to Satellites
This means you’ll get to participate in the rest of the Satellites programme when you’re not on shift, plus access to all our awesome venues.
Free meals
Fantastic news… we’ll feed you for the week! You’ll just need to let us know if you have any dietary requirements, which you can do when you complete your application form. (We can confirm that the food is FANTASTIC! Mark, Esther and the catering team will keep you well fed)
Team training
We’ll make sure that you have the best training to ensure that you’re fully equipped in the role that you are serving on. We’ll start the event, the day before, with a whole team meeting, worship, prayer and usually Dominoes or similar!
Free camping
We’ll have a team campsite specifically for those serving the event, so that you can meet other team members and hang out when you’re not serving. Alternatively, if you’re coming along with your church, you’ll be able to camp with your youth group for the week – just let us know your preference when you apply.
Please note: you’ll need to bring your own tent and camping equipment.
Exclusive venue: Teams Hub
We’ll be making space for a lounge area where you can relax when you’re not on shift, with free tea and coffee on tap throughout the day plus access to charging points and shelter from any rain! There’ll also be a lovely team on hand to chat and pray if you wish.
Application process
To ensure everyone is safe on site, we have a thorough team application system in place. We’ll ask you some questions in an application form to get to know you a bit, we’ll contact your referee for further information and all teams will also require a DBS check. We’ve detailed the steps below!
Head to the booking page and create an account if you don’t already have one. You can use an existing account from a previous Satellites event.
Once you’ve activated your account, click 'Book now' in the top right corner and select the option to create a new group. (Don’t worry, you’re not creating a new group - this is just the way the system works!).
Next add a ticket by entering your details and clicking 'create ticket'. Make sure you check the box at the bottom of this page: ‘This person would like to join this event as a team volunteer’. That will set the price of your ticket to zero. You’ll also need to select the team you’d like to apply for from the drop-down menu. If you don’t know or mind, select ‘I’ll serve anywhere’. There's no charge for team tickets, unless you are 16 or 17 and choosing a 50/50 ticket - in which case you will be invoiced £50 once your team application has been accepted.
Follow the steps to finish your booking. You'll need to let us know your on-site contact details and your accommodation option. Unless you want to camp with a group already booked on site, choose to camp on the teams village. You’ll also need to enter your billing address even though it’s a team ticket and there’s no charge. Choose the same address for shipping.
We’ll then send you an email with a link to your application form. You'll need to complete all of the questions in order to save the form, so please make sure you have everything ready before you start. This includes a head and shoulders photo of you for your team badge, and details for your referee.
Once you've submitted your application, we’ll contact your referee to ask them a few questions about you (please make sure you’ve let them know in advance that you’ve named them as your referee).
We’ll also start a DBS check for you – you’ll get an email from us with specific information on how the DBS process works. Once your DBS check has come back clear, we’ll be in touch to confirm your place on team and allocate your role!
If you have any questions about the process, please get in touch with us!
What are the different teams?
As we mentioned before, there’s something for everyone. Have a look below to read more about each team or choose ‘I’ll serve anywhere’ if you’re not sure or you can’t find your team on the booking form.
I’ll serve anywhere
Have you read through all the different options, but still not sure which team to pick? When applying, select the ‘I’ll serve anywhere’ team and we’ll allocate you to where we need the most help! Please make sure you tell us a little bit about you, your skills and what you enjoy doing when filling in your application form so we can find a spot on a team that we think you’ll love.
(If you’ve had a private conversation with the Satellites team about a role that’s not listed, please select this and send us an email at teams@wearesatellites.co.uk)
Additional Needs
+-We’d love to recruit a small team to support any of the young people on-site who have additional needs. To join this team, you’ll need specific skills and experience of working with young people or children who have additional needs.
Café teams
+-Know your espressos from your cappuccinos? A boss at latte art? We need loads of awesome volunteers to help run our different cafés on site. You’ll be working with your team leader to serve drinks, use the tills to take payments, keep the snacks stocked and make sure the venue is clean and tidy. Bonus points if you can make a good cuppa! (All teams will receive training on the coffee machines!)
Canvas
+-Canvas is a space dedicated to exploring creativity. We’re going to use this venue to run loads of different workshops and classes – covering everything from art to TikTok making, creative writing to gardening! We’ll make space to display some of the pieces created throughout the event too, which could then spark inspiration for others. We’re looking for a small team to help facilitate some of these sessions; they will be run by someone especially skilled in the field so although you won’t need to be a pro artist yourself, you’ll need to have some interest in the creative arts.
Catering
+-We’ll have about 400 volunteers serving at Satellites, so we need a whole bunch of brilliant people on our catering team to help feed them all. You’ll be responsible for helping our team leaders to prepare the food, dishing them up and clearing away at the end of each meal.
Comms
+-From managing all on-site radio traffic to coordinating the response to any emergencies, the Comms team play a vital role at Satellites to ensure that the event runs smoothly. You’ll need to be organised, calm, good at communicating and able to keep calm under pressure – plus bonus points if you already know your phonetic alphabet for chatting on the radio!
Detached
+-As well as having heaps of fun at Satellites, it’s important that we make sure to look after those delegates who might be having a trickier time. We’re recruiting a detached team, including a few experienced mental health first aiders, who can be around to provide extra support for young people on-site.
First aid
+-If you’re a qualified first aider or medical professional, we’d love you to join our first aid team at Satellites. Whilst we’re hoping that no one gets hurt or sick at Satellites, these things do sometimes happen and so we’re looking for a friendly first aid team to be the first point of call for any medical situations that may arise. You’ll need to be confident at making decisions about the best course of treatment if someone gets hurt, and able to stay calm under pressure.
Headstrong
+-Headstrong is a cafe and hub for activities around mental health and wellbeing. That means there'll be short talks about dealing with things like depression and anxiety, but also lots of chilled out activities that use the arts to explore the theme of wellbeing. It’s also a hugely popular cafe serving delicious milkshakes. The venue is linked to Youthscape’s mental health project called Headstrong - you can check out more at beheadstrong.uk. We’re looking for enthusiastic helpers who can run the cafe, organise games and creative activities and who care about helping young people with their mental health.
Info
+-If you’re super friendly and incredibly organised, we’d love you to think about joining our Info team. This team are responsible for helping all delegates with any of their practical needs on site – from booking queries to broken wristbands, questions about the programme or lost property. You’ll need to be approachable and confident when chatting with both young people and youth leaders, plus able to problem solve!
Kids teams
+-Do you love working with children? We’re excited that Satellites is going to be an epic week for the kids of all the youth leaders on site – and we need a brilliant team to help make that happen. It will be split into two age groups and you can let us know which one you’d prefer to be based with: Satell-Mites for the 1-4s and Satellites Kids for the 5-12s. There will be a couple of main sessions each day, plus a range of afternoon activities. Alongside games, drama, experiments, crafts, sports and maybe even a gunge tank(!), the kids on-site at Satellites will be encouraged to explore what it looks like to put God at the centre of their lives in a way that is suitable and engaging for them, as well as making friends and having a lot of fun along the way!
Prayer and Pastoral Support
+-Satellites’ vision is to empower youth leaders and young people to put God at the centre of their lives, so our aim is to facilitate prayer rather than take over.
Our team is here to help young people pray for each other and to offer support to them and their leaders. We provide the space to go deeper in talking stuff through and praying with them.
To become a member of team you can have loads of experience of prayer and/or pastoral work, or absolutely none. You just need to share our vision and join the team.
Satellites Store
+-Love chatting to people? Always wish you’d owned your own shop? The Satellites Store might be the place for you! The Satellites Store is where we’ll be selling our limited-edition Satellites merch from – as well as books and resources to help young people (and their youth leaders!) in their walk with God. You’ll be responsible for keeping the Store looking great, chatting to customers and using the tills to take payment.
Sports
+-Know your Spike Ball from your Four Square? Able to referee a game of footie or organise a wide game? Come and join the sports team! We’re going to run an epic sports programme that everyone – regardless of their skill and experience – can join in with. We’re looking for some passionate sport fans that are up for hosting all sorts of games throughout the week – as well as helping young people to explore how putting God at the centre of our lives can impact our attitude on the pitch/court/field.
Stewarding
+-We need a skilled team of stewards to help us keep everyone safe on-site throughout Satellites. You’ll be put into groups, tasked with patrolling the site, helping delegates, checking wristbands as people go into different venues and help respond to any emergency situations that arise. This role will involve being on your feet for a chunk of time so you’ll need to be prepared for that and bring some comfy shoes you can wear. It would be a huge bonus if you know the phonetic alphabet and you’re comfortable using a radio! We aim to move your duties around so you won’t be doing the same job all week as we know that can get a bit boring.
As well as needing a team of stewards to look after everyone during the day, we also need a bunch of responsible night stewards to keep an eye on everything when everyone is asleep.
Tech
+-Are you technically minded or part of the sound/visuals/lighting team at your church or youth group? If so, we’re looking to gather a bunch of keen, eager and skilled people to be on our tech team. This could involve running the sound desk in a seminar, being on hand to do band changeovers after hours, setting up seminars or kids sessions or even doing screen words in the main venue. Basically if you can plug it in and it makes a noise, you’ll have something to do with it!
